According to insider reports, Hyundai is gearing up to enter the production phase of the Santa Fe EREV, marking the brand’s first Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV).
This move underscores Hyundai’s aggressive electrification strategy, positioning the Santa Fe EREV as a flagship model in its global lineup.
Hyundai aims to finalize the development of a compact internal combustion engine and the ECU for the EREV system by the first half of 2026. Following this, the vehicle will undergo rigorous testing to evaluate performance, durability, and overall quality before receiving production approval.
To ensure timely execution, Hyundai is collaborating with key partners. Hyundai Kefico will spearhead ECU development, while dSPACE, a domestic supplier, will support HIL simulation systems. Hyundai Mobis will focus on battery management and electric motor control systems. This coordinated effort is pivotal for Hyundai’s goal of launching the Santa Fe EREV on schedule.
The Santa Fe EREV is projected to offer nearly double the range of the Ioniq 6, Hyundai’s current long-range electric vehicle (562 km). Its extended-range system positions it as a strategic asset for Hyundai to compete in the global EV market, particularly in regions with limited charging infrastructure.
EREV technology is gaining traction as a solution to range anxiety associated with pure electric vehicles. Major automakers like Volvo are also exploring similar solutions. In China, the EREV segment is thriving with models such as the BYD Yangwang and Xiaomi YU8, highlighting its significant growth potential.
Currently, the Santa Fe offers a hybrid variant combining a 1.6L turbocharged engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 232 horsepower.
The Santa Fe EREV operates exclusively on electric power, with the small internal combustion engine serving solely as a generator to charge the battery when needed, without directly powering the wheels. This design ensures extended range without relying heavily on charging infrastructure, making it ideal for markets transitioning to electric mobility.
Hyundai plans to commence mass production of the Santa Fe EREV in late 2026, with a global launch in 2027. Industry sources suggest the vehicle will likely be assembled at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) facility in the U.S. Post-production, Hyundai aims to distribute the model across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and potentially Vietnam.
