Recently, BYD confirmed the removal of the rotating feature from its central infotainment screen.
The company will transition to a fixed horizontal screen starting with the new Atto 2 model. This design will be implemented across future BYD vehicle lines.
This information was shared by Stella Li, BYD’s Vice President, in a recent interview. According to Li, while many customers found the rotating screen intriguing, it faced limitations when using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both platforms operate exclusively in landscape mode and disconnect automatically if the screen switches to portrait orientation.
A Unique Feature, Rarely Utilized
As BYD expanded globally in recent years, the 90-degree rotating screen became a standout tech feature against competitors. However, BYD noted that most users rarely rotated the screen in practice, despite appreciating its novelty.
Additionally, the integration of more applications prompted BYD to optimize the experience on familiar platforms. The Atto 2 will be the first model equipped with Google and Apple CarPlay, requiring a fixed horizontal screen to ensure full compatibility.
Ongoing Debate Over Screen Orientation
BYD acknowledges that a vertical screen has advantages for displaying maps or when the vehicle is stationary. However, many customers prefer the natural feel of a horizontal experience, especially in modern vehicles that have standardized this format.
Fixing the screen orientation also simplifies BYD’s collaboration with Apple and Google, reducing interface compromises and enabling smoother integration.
BYD’s Global Expansion Continues
Alongside product innovations, BYD is accelerating its international expansion. The company aims to make a significant breakthrough in Europe by 2026. Last week, BYD’s European representatives announced plans to double its retail network, targeting approximately 1,000 sales points by next year.
