According to newly released data from the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office, VinFast has filed registration documents for three new vehicle models, including one sedan and two SUVs.
Notably, all three designs feature a traditional grille at the front, sparking speculation that the company may be developing vehicles with a hybrid combustion and electric engine system.
New Design by VF 7’s Lead Designer
The sedan and one SUV share a similar design language, evident in their front fascia, daytime running lights, vertical headlights, and rear layout. These models were penned by Jae Hoon Lee, the Korean designer behind the VF 7.
A notable departure from current VinFast models is the absence of the signature “wing” detail in the design sketches. However, as these are design patents, details may evolve before the final production versions.
Based on their overall design, industry experts predict that if produced, these vehicles will target the premium segment, similar to VinFast’s approach with the President and Lac Hong 900 LX models.
Third SUV Designed by Torino Design
In addition to the aforementioned models, VinFast has also registered a third SUV with a distinct grille and wheel design. The iconic ‘V’ logo remains intact. This model was designed by Roberto Michele Piatti, founder of Torino Design, known for creating several iconic VinFast vehicles.
The Grille: A Hint at VinFast’s New Strategy
The consistent presence of a traditional grille across all three designs strengthens recent reports that VinFast is considering developing hybrid electric vehicles.
At a recent event hosted by VinFast’s largest tire supplier, a hybrid-specific tire was showcased. The tire’s design resembles that of the VF 8, further fueling speculation about the company’s hybrid ambitions.
According to Reuters, VinFast tasked a team of engineers in November to explore converting the VF 9 to an EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) configuration. This would involve using a small gasoline engine as a generator for long-distance travel, while primarily relying on electric motors, reducing dependency on charging stations.
The company has also posted at least three job listings on LinkedIn seeking EREV specialists, indicating that this initiative is well underway.
A Strategic Shift from All-Electric Focus
If VinFast enters the hybrid electric vehicle market, it would mark a significant shift from its 2021 commitment to an all-electric lineup. The company currently offers 12 BEV models, ranging from compact cars to large SUVs.
As of October, VinFast leads Vietnam’s automotive market with over 120,000 vehicles sold. The best-selling models are the VF 3 (36,005 units) and VF 5 (35,406 units), which have played a crucial role in expanding the company’s customer base.
