Jaguar Land Rover’s recent rebranding strategy has sparked considerable debate, particularly following the unveiling of the Type 00 concept.
Many enthusiasts have expressed disappointment, arguing that the changes stray too far from the brand’s core values.
Amid this controversy, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has terminated its partnership with Design Director Gerry McGovern, who had been with the company for over two decades. According to Autocar and Autocar India, McGovern was “escorted out of the office” earlier this week, though Jaguar has yet to issue an official statement.
This move comes just days after former CEO Adrian Mardell stepped down. His successor, PB Balaji, the former CFO of Tata Motors, is expected to spearhead a significant restructuring at JLR. With over three decades of experience, Balaji is seen as a key figure in reshaping the British automaker’s future.
While details remain undisclosed, many speculate that McGovern’s departure is linked to the negative backlash surrounding Jaguar’s rebranding efforts.
During his tenure, McGovern was instrumental in designing several JLR flagship models, including the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Defender, and the latest Range Rover generation. Most recently, he oversaw the design of the Type 00 concept, which has been heavily criticized since late 2024.
Jaguar showcased the Type 00 at Paris Fashion Week to unveil its new brand image, but the radical design, updated logo, and aggressive electrification strategy have alienated many loyal fans.
JLR has not yet announced McGovern’s replacement or indicated whether the rebranding strategy will be revised in light of the mixed feedback.
