At traffic intersections with signal lights, the moment the green light turns yellow often leaves many drivers in a state of hesitation.
Instead of slowing down and preparing to stop, many choose to accelerate to cross the intersection, thinking, “It’s not red yet, so it’s not a violation.” However, according to current regulations, running a yellow light is still considered non-compliance with traffic signals and can result in severe penalties.
As per Decree 168, when the signal light turns yellow, drivers must reduce speed and stop before the stop line. Only if the vehicle has already crossed the stop line while the light is still green are they allowed to proceed, provided they slow down and ensure safety. At intersections with flashing yellow lights, drivers may proceed but must slow down, observe carefully, and yield to pedestrians or wheelchair users.
For motorcyclists, intentionally running a yellow light is classified as non-compliance with traffic signal commands. Offenders may face a fine of 4 to 6 million VND and a deduction of 4 points from their driver’s license. If running a yellow light causes a traffic accident, the penalty increases to 10 to 14 million VND, along with a 10-point deduction from the license.
For car drivers, the penalties are even stricter. Since the beginning of the year, sanctions for running yellow lights have been significantly increased, several times higher than before. Specifically, car drivers who fail to comply with traffic signals, including yellow lights, may be fined 18 to 20 million VND and have 4 points deducted from their license. If this behavior causes an accident, the fine increases to 20 to 22 million VND, along with a 10-point deduction.
Notably, enforcement is not limited to on-duty traffic police but is also supported by AI-powered surveillance cameras at key intersections. These cameras can fully record the process of vehicles approaching, crossing the stop line, and passing through the intersection, with high-resolution images and videos. This means that last-minute accelerations to run yellow lights can still be detected and penalized through post-violation ticketing.
The tightening of penalties for non-compliance with traffic signals aims not only to increase deterrence but also to change the common habit of “seizing a few seconds” prevalent in urban traffic. In reality, a moment of haste at an intersection can pose a serious risk of accidents, endangering the safety of both the driver and others.
