Thanks to a lesser-known Japanese supplier, a common frustration for drivers during rainy weather may soon be resolved in a practical way. Specifically, Car Mate—a company you might not have heard of—has launched an innovative water-repellent film designed to keep side mirrors clear and streak-free during rain.

This tiny film could be the solution to foggy side mirrors in rainy conditions.
The Zero Wiper Film-Type Side Mirror was first unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 before its official launch in Japan the following year. It’s set to debut in the U.S. next January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, offering drivers a simple yet effective solution for maintaining visibility in poor weather.
The concept behind the Zero Wiper Film-Type Side Mirror is straightforward: the film adheres directly to the mirror’s surface, creating a protective layer with exceptional water-repelling properties. Early demonstrations show water droplets swiftly sliding off, leaving the mirror clear and unobstructed.

According to Car Mate, the film’s surface mimics the microstructure of a lotus leaf—a natural example of superior water resistance. This design causes water to bead up and roll off rather than adhere to the glass, significantly improving visibility during rain, especially while driving.
Notably, the film is universally compatible with most modern side mirrors since it’s not tailored to specific vehicle models. However, this comes with a minor trade-off: the outer edges of the mirror remain uncovered, creating a visible border that may slightly affect aesthetics for some users.
Water-repellent mirror films aren’t entirely new to the U.S. market. Similar products are already available on platforms like Amazon and Walmart, and drivers can also use water-repelling sprays such as RainX for their side mirrors. However, Car Mate emphasizes the durability and convenience of their product.
The company claims the film can last up to six months before needing replacement, offering a long-term, low-maintenance solution. While pricing and U.S. distribution details for the Zero Wiper Film-Type Side Mirror remain undisclosed, it could make a small but significant difference for drivers frequently navigating rainy conditions.
