While neighboring countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia have become playgrounds for Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, Vietnam stands out as a unique anomaly in the regional green vehicle landscape.

According to the latest analysis from Nikkei Asia, Vietnam’s market is a rare exception, remaining largely untouched by Chinese brands. Here, the domestic automaker VinFast not only leads but also dominates, forcing foreign competitors to struggle for market share from the starting line.

Since announcing its full transition to electric vehicles in 2022, VinFast has launched a rapid, comprehensive offensive across all segments, from mini-SUVs to mid-size SUVs. This well-prepared strategy has created a product range with coverage that international brands have yet to match. While Chinese brands entering Vietnam between 2022 and 2023 remain in exploratory phases with limited models, VinFast has swiftly established a nationwide sales network and charging infrastructure, creating a robust barrier to entry.

By 2025, the domestic market witnessed a historic milestone as VinFast’s total EV sales surpassed 100,000 units. This figure even exceeds the combined EV sales of several other regional markets, reflecting consumers’ unwavering trust in the homegrown brand. Nikkei Asia notes that VinFast’s advantage lies not only in competitive pricing but also in its long-term investment in ecosystem development and flexible financial support policies for customers from the outset.

Despite their significant advantages in production scale and costs, Chinese automakers have fallen short of expectations in penetrating the Vietnamese market. The gap in brand trust and delayed infrastructure development compared to VinFast are key reasons for their struggle to gain a foothold. Vietnam remains one of the few regional markets where a domestic player leads the green vehicle revolution.

However, experts caution that VinFast’s current advantage is time-bound. From 2025 to 2030, as the market expands, competitive pressure from international brands, particularly in the affordable segment, will intensify. Nonetheless, VinFast’s current differentiation serves as a prime example of early ecosystem control and strategic development in an emerging market.
