The current Mazda2 and CX-3 models are beginning to show their age, much like seasoned marathon runners nearing the end of a long race. Both vehicles debuted in 2014 and have since undergone numerous upgrades and refinements to stay relevant in the market.
However, every vehicle reaches its end, and for Mazda’s smallest offerings, that moment appears imminent. According to Japan’s Creative Trend, citing internal dealership documents, Mazda plans to discontinue production of both the Mazda2 and CX-3 by 2026. This timeline makes sense, as these models are the oldest in Mazda’s lineup, and longevity is rarely overlooked in segments demanding constant innovation.
Specifically, the CX-3 is slated to end production in March 2026, followed by the Mazda2 in June 2026. Until then, Mazda will continue accepting orders in Japan until the final quota is met. Remaining inventory will then be sold until supplies are exhausted.
After over a decade, these enduring Mazda models are set to bid farewell.
Will Mazda Replace the CX-3 and Mazda2?
Despite rumors of Mazda exiting the compact car segment, such a move seems increasingly unlikely. The Hiroshima-based company appears to have other plans.
The clearest hint at the Mazda2’s successor is the Vision X-Compact Concept, unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. This hatchback concept features a modern design and an AI-integrated interior.

Notably, the Vision X-Compact is 255 mm shorter than the current Mazda2. If this dimension is retained in production, Mazda’s next entry-level model could shift to the A-segment.
Regardless, this new model is expected to launch around 2027, serving as an accessible entry point to the Mazda brand in global markets.
A New Compact SUV in the Works?
For the CX-3, its global sales performance is strong enough for Mazda to consider a successor. Earlier this year, Mazda teased a new direction during an official presentation in Thailand, revealing two design sketches of a compact SUV with a wider stance and sharper proportions, reminiscent of the latest Mazda CX-5.
Rumored to be the Mazda CX-20
The upcoming model may be named the CX-20, though Mazda has yet to confirm this. Global distribution plans remain uncertain, but if launched, the CX-20 would compete with rivals like the Toyota Yaris Cross and other compact SUVs from competing brands.
