Recently, the driver of a Ford Territory with a license plate obscured by mud arrived at the headquarters of the authorities for questioning.

A representative from the Hanoi Traffic Police Department stated that the individual received an administrative fine of 23 million VND and had 6 demerit points deducted from their driver’s license, as per current regulations.

At the headquarters of Road Traffic Police Team No. 9, the driver was identified as Mr. Nguyen Van H., a resident of Hanoi. He admitted to driving a car with the license plate 30M-246.XX on National Highway 32, in the Dan Phuong district, at around 10:30 AM on January 26th. As the vehicle reached the Dan Phuong flower garden area, a patrol team stopped the car for a routine inspection.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered that the license plate was unreadable due to heavy mud accumulation, particularly on the rear of the vehicle. At the time, the driver believed the violation would result in a minor fine and requested the patrol team to issue a ticket for the correct offense, even recording a video for social media. The incident quickly gained attention online, sparking debates about the fine amount and the vehicle’s contrasting condition: a clean front but a heavily soiled rear.

Explaining the vehicle’s condition, Mr. H. mentioned that the car had traveled through muddy roads in Thanh Hoa province four days prior. Despite noticing the mud covering the rear and license plate upon returning to Hanoi, he attributed the lack of cleaning to a busy schedule. Regarding his initial heated reaction towards the authorities, Mr. H. admitted to not fully understanding the legal regulations, leading to inappropriate thoughts and actions. After receiving detailed explanations from the Traffic Police regarding penalties for obscuring license plates, the driver signed the report and pledged to comply with the rules.

This incident serves as a reminder to all road users about the importance of maintaining visible license plates under all weather conditions. According to the law, obscured license plates, whether intentional or not, hinder traffic management and monitoring efforts. The total fine of 23 million VND and demerit points serve as a strong deterrent, urging drivers to thoroughly inspect their vehicles before driving.
