Quick review of the Yangwang U9: An electric supercar with 1,100 horsepower, 3 wheels, 360-degree rotation, jumping, and a price equal to the BMW Z4 in Vietnam

After acquiring dozens of subsidiary companies and joint ventures, BYD has officially established a subsidiary specializing in the production of luxury cars, which is Yangwang, a luxury electric car brand from China owned by BYD Auto. The brand logo is a Chinese character meaning “lightning” or “electricity”. This is the first car brand to introduce BYD’s exclusive Individual Wheel Drive (IWD) technology platform called “e4”.

Yangwang’s products have made many people excited because of their modern design, fully equipped interior, and state-of-the-art technology, which is the pinnacle of the Chinese automotive industry in particular and the world in general. The U8 is an interesting SUV with many features that other competitors in the same segment do not have, while the U9 is a dynamic electric supercar, which we will explore and review quickly below.

Exterior design

Yangwang U9 is introduced by BYD as applying the design language of “time and space portal”, the shape of the headlights draws inspiration from outer space, the entire front face is strong and can withstand strong impacts while maintaining the lowest drag coefficient.

Specifically, the large LED headlights of the car have a C-shaped design, if you look closely, this design is reminiscent of the new models of Toyota introduced recently such as the Crown or bZ3, in addition, the front air intake of the Yangwang U9 is divided into 3 sections, the car is also equipped with large-size air intakes, an essential detail of luxury supercars.

The car body structure applies the classic car body ratio of fuel-powered cars, the low body posture creates a thrilling and dynamic effect, the lower window frame has a dynamic shape, and the gullwing doors are used to open it, looking very luxurious and eye-catching.

To bring balance to the exterior, BYD equips the Yangwang U9 supercar with 21-inch wheels, with 10 interwoven spokes, contrasting black and silver paint.

At the rear of the Yangwang U9, where the large electrically adjustable air intakes are located, combined with the dynamic diffuser design, it shows the impressive performance of the car, all of these details are made of carbon fiber, bringing high aesthetic value, as well as helping to reduce weight.

Quite interestingly, even though it is an electric car, the Yangwang U9 is also equipped with an engine compartment cover like gasoline supercars, which creates a highlight for the car. Finally, the LED taillights extend all the way to the tail of the car, giving a sense of both technology and charisma. Overall, the design of the Yangwang U9 is very modern, and it is worthy of being the top electric supercar from China.

Interior

There have been many contrasting comments about the interior of the Yangwang U9, with some saying that it is not as luxurious as other BYD models, and even that it does not deserve the design of the car, because it looks quite plain. However, it’s important to note that a supercar doesn’t need to cram too many things into the cockpit, like Bugatti did with the Veyron, instead, it focuses on design, performance, and engine, which are the important factors.

A quick overview will show that the Yangwang U9 is wrapped in leather on all details, from the dashboard, center console, ceiling to the seats, with some carbon fiber details. The car has 2 seats with a center console reminiscent of the Porsche 918 Spyder introduced 10 years ago. On this console, the company equips a vertical screen, multiple buttons, and a space below to hold personal items.

In between the 2 seats, there is a wireless phone charging area, the driver and the passenger have separate floating screens, but the design is somewhat minimalist compared to the price and the supercar brand. Both sides of the door panel are equipped with a considerable number of buttons such as seat adjustment, mirror folding, door lock, window control, etc.

Powertrain

The Yangwang U9 uses 4 electric motors, producing a total maximum power of up to 1,100 horsepower and a maximum torque of 1,280 Nm.

Thanks to that, BYD’s electric supercar can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2 seconds and can drive 700 km after a full charge. In addition, the Yangwang U9 also has a 4-wheel electronic drive system with complex torque distribution functions.

The technologies on the Yangwang U9 will astonish many like the 360-degree rotation, which means you can rotate the car with just a press of a button instead of having to reverse or move forward as usual, in addition, the Yangwang U9 can also jump, and even run on 3 wheels, thanks to its special suspension system called Disus-X.
