Growth in the B-segment sedan segment in December 2023 is driven by year-end shopping in Vietnam. The trio of Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent, and Honda City experienced the strongest growth, while Suzuki Ciaz saw a decline in sales.

Sales table of B-segment sedans in December 2023 (unit: cars)

Toyota Vios: 3,022 cars

In December 2023, Toyota sold a total of 3,022 Vios cars in Vietnam, which represents a growth rate of 94.2%. The Vios is not only the top-selling model in the C-segment sedan segment but also dominates the entire market. Additionally, it is the best-selling model for Toyota last month.

In the year-to-date of 2023, Toyota Vios achieved sales of 13,521 cars, a decrease of 42.5% compared to 2022, ranking it second in its segment after the Hyundai Accent. However, this figure is enough for Toyota Vios to enter the top 10 best-selling car models in Vietnam for 2023, ranking fifth. In 2022, Toyota Vios was the best-selling model in the Vietnamese market with sales of 23,529 cars.

Toyota Vios

One possible reason why Toyota Vios is not as popular as before is due to the controversial design of the upgraded version. While cars in other Southeast Asian markets have been completely redesigned in terms of design and equipment, the version sold in Vietnam remains the same. Introduced in May 2023, this version is only available in Vietnam.

Currently, Toyota Vios in Vietnam has 3 versions with prices ranging from 479 to 592 million VND.

Hyundai Accent: 2,752 cars

In December 2023, Vietnamese consumers purchased 2,752 Hyundai Accent cars, representing a growth rate of 63.2%. Despite strong growth, Hyundai Accent lost its top position in the B-segment sedan segment to its rival, Toyota Vios.

For the entire year of 2023, Hyundai Accent has sold 17,452 cars in Vietnam, a decrease of 22.9% compared to 2022. This is expected as the Vietnamese car market saw continuous decline last year due to the economic recession. With these results, Hyundai Accent ranks second overall, just behind the Mitsubishi Xpander and is currently the best-selling model in the Hyundai lineup in Vietnam.

Hyundai Accent

Prices for the Hyundai Accent in Vietnam range from 426.1 to 542.1 million VND for 4 different versions.

Honda City: 1,503 cars

Honda City also saw a successful month in December 2023 with sales of 1,503 cars, representing a growth rate of 70%. With these results, Honda City is the third best-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam.

For the entire year of 2023, Honda City sold 9,894 cars, a decrease of 32.6% compared to 2022. Despite the decline, Honda City managed to enter the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam for the year, ranking 10th overall.

Honda City

Currently, the Honda City is the best-selling Honda model in Vietnam. It is worth noting that the Honda City has higher prices compared to most competitors, except for the Volkswagen Virtus. The prices range from 559 to 609 million VND for the 3 available versions.

Similar to the Toyota Vios, the Honda City also received an upgrade version during its lifecycle in July this year. The upgraded version includes the standard active safety technology package Honda Sensing, a feature that the Toyota Vios and Hyundai Accent do not have. Additionally, the car’s rear disc brakes were also upgraded.

Mitsubishi Attrage: 555 cars

Compared to November 2023, sales of the Mitsubishi Attrage in December 2023 increased by 30.5%. In the last month of 2023, this car model achieved sales of 555 cars. Sales for the entire year of 2023 reached 5,050 cars, a decrease of 29.9% compared to 2022.

Mitsubishi Attrage

The Mitsubishi Attrage stands out for its attractive price in its segment, ranging from 380 to 490 million VND, and its fuel-efficient engine. However, the comfort and safety features of the car are just average and do not stand out compared to its competitors in the segment.

Mazda2: 524 cars

Mazda2 also experienced an increase in sales in December 2023 with 524 cars sold, representing an increase of 62.2%. This brings the total sales of the Japanese car model for the entire year to 4,019 cars.

Mazda2

The Mazda2 Sedan is currently a budget-friendly car model, with prices ranging from 420 to 524 million VND for the 3 available versions. Additionally, the Mazda2 features an attractive exterior design that resonates with Vietnamese consumers. However, it does have a drawback of having a cramped interior space.

Kia Soluto: 100 cars

As a sibling model in the same group, Kia Soluto has lower sales volume than the Hyundai Accent. The sales figure for December 2023 was 100 cars, representing a slight increase of 5.2%. The total sales for the entire year of Kia Soluto are also modest, with 1,055 cars sold.

Kia Soluto

Kia Soluto is not highly regarded by Vietnamese consumers due to its unremarkable design and equipment. Despite its low price range of 386 to 482 million VND, this Korean car model has failed to attract buyers.

Suzuki Ciaz: 1 car

Suzuki Ciaz is the only B-segment sedan model that experienced a decrease in sales in December 2023, with only 1 car sold. Compared to November 2023, sales of this car model decreased by 75%. From the beginning of the year until now, only 37 Vietnamese people have purchased this Japanese car model.

Suzuki Ciaz

Suzuki Ciaz has an unattractive design and only comes in one version with a price of 534.9 million VND. This is one of the reasons why this car model is not popular in Vietnam.
