Mazda recently announced that production of the Mazda6 model for the Japanese market will end in mid-April 2024. This marks the gradual phase-out of this D-segment sedan from major markets, following the cessation of production in North America in 2021 and in the UK just last year.

Kazuyoshi Todo, Executive Officer in charge of sales in Japan for Mazda, stated that the Mazda6 had accumulated sales of 226,437 units over 12 years in Japan, and it had gained popularity among many customers.

“The CX crossover lineup will now take on this role, and we will continue to provide customers with engaging driving experiences that are suitable for the modern era,” said Mr. Todo.

Todo’s comments indicate that Mazda is increasingly shifting its focus towards the production of SUVs and crossovers. These high-riding models are dominant forces in the automotive industry, favored by buyers, and generate higher profits for car manufacturers.

Although Mazda has not officially announced plans for a direct replacement for the Mazda6, rumors suggest that a rear-wheel-drive sedan is currently under development, and it will be based on the platform used for the brand’s larger SUVs.
