Reuters reported that Toyota has announced that the top two executives of Daihatsu will resign. These changes at the top level of Daihatsu come nearly a year after the carmaker, which is a subsidiary of Toyota, admitted to cheating in safety crash tests.
According to Reuters, this move is considered one of the most significant changes implemented at Daihatsu up to now. The departure of the two top executives is part of Toyota’s efforts to restore Daihatsu’s position as one of Japan’s most iconic mini car manufacturers.
Meanwhile, Toyota faces the risk of damage to its reputation after granting a safety certification for Daihatsu was revoked. According to Reuters, Toyota also has to deal with issues related to Hino Motors and Toyota Industries, primarily due to their management systems.
These scandals affecting Daihatsu, Toyota Industries, and Hino Motors have previously forced Toyota President Akio Toyoda to apologize.

In the latest announcement, Toyota confirmed that Masahiro Inoue, former CEO of Toyota in Latin America and the Caribbean, will replace Soichiro Okudaira as the leader of Daihatsu. This decision will take effect from March 1st.
Meanwhile, the position of Chairman of Daihatsu will remain vacant after Sunao Matsubayashi’s resignation, and there is no replacement yet.
According to Reuters, Soichiro Okudaira has worked for the Toyota Group for nearly four decades before taking the top position at Daihatsu in 2017, just one year after Daihatsu completed its merger with the leading Japanese automaker.
Although this announcement of leadership structure changes at Daihatsu, Toyota CEO Koji Sato confirmed to reporters that this move is not a punishment for the personnel involved.
Previously, reports showed that Daihatsu’s sales for the 12 months of 2023 were over 790,000 vehicles, accounting for about 7% of Toyota’s total sales of 11.2 million vehicles. Toyota remains the global leader in sales in the past year, surpassing Volkswagen AG’s sales of 9.24 million vehicles.
