On April 24, 2024, at the Beijing Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled its all-new, fully electric SUV, the aptly named G 580 with EQ Technology. This is the all-electric version of the luxury SUV known as the “king of off-road,” the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

Thus, the three-pointed star brand did not use the EQG name, as had been predicted, for the all-electric version of the G-Class. It is also the first electric vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to not bear the familiar EQ name.

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 has dimensions of 4,624 x 1,931 x 1,986 mm in length, width, and height, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. Compared to the conventional gasoline version, the electric SUV is 253 mm shorter and 11 mm taller, while the width and wheelbase remain identical.

Despite being an electric car, the Mercedes-Benz G 580’s overall appearance is not much different from the conventional gasoline version. It retains the boxy and rugged exterior characteristic of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. At the same time, the Mercedes-Benz G 580’s exterior is quite faithful to the EQG concept car that debuted in 2021.

Of course, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 also has some exterior details that differ from the gasoline version. This is evident in the front end, with its glossy black grille surrounded by a thin strip of lights. Next is the 18-inch alloy wheel set with 265/50 R18 tires. The vehicle’s hood is slightly raised, while the rear wheel arch features additional vents to reduce the drag coefficient.

The rear tailgate of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 does not have a spare tire like the gasoline version. Instead, there is a small, boxy storage compartment. Users can use this compartment to store the charging cable and other small items.

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 comes with two different exterior design packages. One package will add bright exterior accents to the vehicle. The other package includes dark exterior accents.

In addition, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 also has a limited-edition version called the Edition One. The Edition One is highlighted by its unique paint color, logos, and 20-inch alloy wheels with a 10-spoke design, finished in glossy black. The vehicle’s side mirrors integrate welcome lights, projecting the words “Stronger than time” and the “G” logo onto the ground. The AMG Line and Night Package exterior design packages are also included.

Like the exterior, the interior of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 is similar to the gasoline version. Inside this all-electric SUV, you’ll find notable features such as a sporty flat-bottom steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster connected to an 11.6-inch center touchscreen, turbine-style air vents, leather seats, and two 11.6-inch rear-seat entertainment screens mounted on the backs of the front seats. The MBUX infotainment system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity are also included.

Powering the Mercedes-Benz G 580 are electric motors with a combined output of 432 kW (approximately 588 horsepower) and a maximum torque of up to 1,164 Nm. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.
