The car license plate auction held today, January 11, 2024, surprised many people, as there was only one plate that was auctioned off for billions of Vietnamese dong, while the rest only fetched a few hundred million dong, and some plates even sold at the floor price.
But on a day when there weren’t many high-priced special plates in the auction, the plate 30K-777.77, which was considered extremely beautiful, attracted attention when a tycoon bid up to 9.365 billion dong for it, making it the most talked-about star of the event.
According to the regulations, the winner of the car license plate auction for 30K-777.77 must pay the full amount within 15 days from the date of the result announcement. This amount is deducted from the deposit (40 million dong), but does not include the vehicle registration fee.
After that, within 12 months, the winner of the license plate auction must register this plate for a car. If the registration is not completed within the deadline, this beautiful license plate will be transferred to the registration and vehicle management system, and the winner of the auction will not be refunded the amount paid for the winning bid.
As for the significance of the special plate “30K-777.77”, according to many interpretations, the number 7 is considered inauspicious and associated with loss and misfortune, so the special plate with the number 7 is not considered beautiful because it can bring about loss, and even other beautiful numbers like 6, 8, 9 which are associated with luck, wealth, and longevity are considered bad when combined with 7, such as 78 being associated with loss of wealth, 76 with loss of luck, and 79 besides its meaning of great wealth also represents loss of longevity. In addition, the number 7 coincides with the 7th month in the lunar calendar, a month that Vietnamese people are familiar with as the “Ghost Month” which is associated with taboos and unfavorable business activities.
However, the number 7 is highly revered in Buddhism because it symbolizes family values, such as the Vu Lan festival on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month, which is a day for children to honor and express gratitude to their parents.
Furthermore, the “30K-777.77” combination also represents the five elements, which are believed to be the foundation for the existence and development of all things. The theory of the five elements is applied in traditional Vietnamese medicine to treat illnesses and promote longevity. Therefore, the beauty or ugliness of the special “30K-777.77” license plate depends on individual interpretation and belief.

On the afternoon of October 11th, following discussions, the National Assembly Standing Committee reached an agreement to submit a Draft Resolution on piloting the granting of the right to choose automobile license plates through auctions to the National Assembly, with the aim of granting more authority to the Government.
