Kia is rapidly expanding its lineup of electric vehicles with the introduction of more SUV models across various segments. After unveiling the flagship Kia EV9 earlier this year and with the upcoming EV5, which will have a similar size to the Sportage, being prepared for the Chinese market, spy photographers have now caught a glimpse of their smaller sibling, the EV4, undergoing testing in Europe.
The test prototype is heavily camouflaged, making it difficult to discern many details about the car’s design. However, a few features are visible, such as the eye-catching triangular-shaped rims, which give the EV4 a futuristic appearance, and the vertically stacked LED headlights. The black pillars, reminiscent of the larger EV5 and EV9, along with the taillight arrangement, which is similar to the EV6, can also be observed.
In terms of size, the Kia EV4 seems to fall between the Soul, which measures 4,195mm in length, and the Niro, which measures 4,420mm. It appears that Kia intends to position its new SUV towards the upper end of the B-SUV segment, competing with recently upgraded models like the Peugeot e-2008.
Similar to other electric models from Hyundai and Kia, the EV4 is expected to be developed on the E-GMP platform. However, it may differ from other Kia electric models by utilizing a 400V battery pack and a single electric motor to keep its price more affordable, instead of the 800V battery pack used in other models. There are rumors circulating that the starting price of the EV4 will be below $30,000, making it the most economical Kia electric vehicle, at least until the even smaller EV3 is launched.
Based on the close resemblance of the test prototype to the production version, it suggests that the launch of the Kia EV4 is imminent. Reports indicate that Kia plans to introduce the EV4 either by the end of 2023 or in the first quarter of 2024.
