Chery unveils new pickup truck model, competing with Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux

As part of its extensive expansion plan into global markets, particularly in the Asia-Pacific, South America, and Europe regions, BYD is gearing up to challenge the midsize pickup truck market.

A Chinese automaker is preparing to unveil an unnamed body-on-frame pickup under the Chery logo in Australia and the subsidiary brand ‘Karry’ in other regions. While they experimented in the 2010s with the unimpressive Karry Higgo, which was designed backwards and took inspiration from Isuzu, this time BYD is designing this model more finely.

The front of the car features a diamond-shaped grille seamlessly integrated with the LED headlights, reminiscent of the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The lower bumper, hood, and front mudguard have a rounder and more angular design than the rugged, straight lines usually found on competing products.

Things become more ordinary on the side, with lower door panels in the shape of shells and a vertical cabin that provides practicality and easy access. At the rear, you will find a short bed surrounded by black plastic bars resembling ventilation slots. The angular LED taillights bear the ‘Chery’ logo on the trunk. The lower cladding gives the car an SUV-like feel, although it may come with a more utilitarian steel bumper for commercial buyers.

The interior of the car features a 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 10.25-inch infotainment system, with many details borrowed from the Omoda 5 SUV and similar technology features. Similar to the Omoda 5, you can expect wireless charging, ambient lighting, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 3D cameras, remote start, heated front seats, and heated steering wheel. A comprehensive driver assistance suite will be equipped as standard.

The vehicle will have options for EV, plug-in hybrid, and gasoline engines, with the EV version having an 800-volt structure and dual motors producing up to 473 horsepower. In China, Chery’s pickup truck has an advantage in battery swapping as Nio has just signed an agreement with Chery and JAC to use their battery swap stations.

The PHEV option, including a 1.5L turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor, is similar to the setup used in the Jetour Traveller SUV. In addition, a 2.0L turbocharged engine will also be used on Chery’s pickup truck model.
