In the Chinese market, the German brand Volkswagen offers a diverse range of SUVs, providing a variety of choices for customers. However, this hasn’t stopped them from launching yet another new SUV, the Tharu XR.

The name of this vehicle hints at a connection to the Volkswagen Tharu, which was introduced in the Chinese market back in 2018. Compared to its predecessor, the Tharu XR is smaller in size. In fact, the new Tharu XR is positioned to fill the gap between the T-Cross and Tharu models.

Built on the same MQB A0 platform as the T-Cross, the Volkswagen Tharu XR has dimensions of 4,355 mm in length, 1,762 mm in width, and 1,605 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,651 mm. With these specifications, it falls into the B-SUV segment, similar to the Toyota Corolla Cross. In comparison to the Tharu, the Tharu XR is 103 mm shorter, while its wheelbase is 29 mm shorter.

The Volkswagen Tharu XR Shares the Same Platform as the T-Cross.

The Tharu XR’s exterior design is familiar and characteristic of Volkswagen’s styling. The designers seem to have intentionally highlighted the connection between the Tharu XR and the T-Cross.

The resemblance is particularly noticeable on the sides, where the Tharu XR features similar character lines and creases as the Volkswagen T-Cross.

However, the front end of the Tharu XR has a unique design that sets it apart from its SUV siblings. In fact, its front-end design bears a strong resemblance to the Tiguan L Pro, from the sharp LED headlights to the large air intakes on the front bumper. At the rear, the Tharu XR sports new LED taillights with smoked lenses.

Depending on the trim level, the B-segment SUV will feature one of two exterior design packages: chrome or black. Unfortunately, images of the interior have not yet been released.

Under the hood, the Volkswagen Tharu XR offers two engine options. The first is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 110 horsepower. The second is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that generates 158 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

While the pricing of the Volkswagen Tharu XR has not yet been disclosed, it is expected to be positioned between the Volkswagen T-Cross (priced at 115,900 Chinese yuan) and the Tharu (priced at 158,600 Chinese yuan). This B-segment SUV will be produced by the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture and may be exclusively targeted at the Chinese market.
