A serious multiple-vehicle collision occurred on Phu My Bridge in Thu Duc City on the evening of August 8, attracting significant public attention due to its severity.
The cause of the accident was determined to be a truck with the license plate number 68H-000.68, which lost its brakes while descending the bridge slope, leading to a disastrous crash.
It is understood that eight cars were involved in the incident, including a truck, two container trucks, and five other cars with four to seven seats. Three of the vehicles caught fire after the collision.
Among the affected vehicles, the Volvo XC90 that was hit head-on by the truck and then pushed into the back of a tractor unit was perhaps the most severely damaged. Although the SUV was almost completely crushed, the remaining frame miraculously held up, allowing the driver to escape. The driver was quickly rescued by bystanders before the Swedish car brand’s vehicle burst into flames.
Volvo has consistently been renowned as the safest car brand globally. Notably, the Volvo XC90 has consistently achieved perfect scores in safety assessments conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The vehicle’s structure comprises up to 40% boron steel, the strongest steel currently used in the automotive body manufacturing industry. This material is produced through a process of heat treatment and rapid cooling, enabling it to withstand high-impact forces without deformation or breakage.
Additionally, the frame is designed to efficiently absorb collision forces, and the seats are equipped with compression-absorbing springs to prevent back injuries.
Every Volvo XC90, and indeed all Volvo models, come equipped with the most advanced safety features globally, including autonomous driving assistance with Pilot Assist, automatic parking assistance, automatic emergency braking to avoid collisions, collision warning systems, road condition safety assistance, and cross-traffic alert technology.
