According to sources, Hyundai is reportedly planning to develop an all-new electric pickup truck that could rival the Tesla Cybertruck.

Back in July, Hyundai disassembled a Tesla Cybertruck for analysis and research, laying the groundwork for their own upcoming pickup truck model.

While the South Korean automaker has been tight-lipped about their new truck, there are rumors that Hyundai will offer a gasoline engine option. However, it won’t directly power the vehicle but rather serve to charge the batteries, extending the truck’s range.

Hyundai aims to sell 50,000 units of this new pickup truck annually starting from 2029. The model is expected to become a key driver of the brand’s sales. Fellow group member, Kia, is also planning to launch a pickup truck with similar sales targets.

Hyundai anticipates that their new truck will offer a range of over 400 kilometers and a towing capacity of approximately 4,000 kilograms. In reality, these targets are more achievable for a hybrid vehicle with an engine that assists in charging the batteries, as current battery technology would require a massive pack to meet these goals in a pure electric truck.

Besides dissecting the Tesla Cybertruck, Hyundai has also been studying two other popular pickup trucks on the market to understand their success and incorporate those elements into their new model.
