With Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, still over a week away, car rental services are already in high demand. According to a survey by Tri Thức – Znews, many self-drive car rental stores have started receiving a high volume of bookings.
Doubled Prices and Minimum Rental Periods
When contacting a self-drive car rental service in Ho Chi Minh City to inquire about a 3-4 day rental during Tet, the staff quickly declined, stating that almost all of their vehicles, especially 7-seaters, have been booked.
Mr. Truong Hai, the manager of Dat Phuong Nam car rental company, shared that their Tet rental situation is not much different from previous years. They prioritize long-term rental packages of around 8-10 days during Tet instead of short-term rentals.
Rental prices have increased by 50-70% compared to regular days, depending on the vehicle type. Specifically, SUV 4-seaters and MPVs like the Yaris Cross and Mitsubishi Xpander have seen a 50% price hike. For large SUVs, rental rates have gone up by about 70% due to increased demand.
Speaking to Tri Thức – Znews, a representative from Trung An Khang company shared that they only have 2-3 cars left for the upcoming Tet holiday. “Our fleet has about 30 cars prepared for Tet, but as of now, only 2-3 are still available. Most of our regular customers booked their rentals early, starting from the beginning of January,” the representative said.

While long-term rental packages are still offered, they have been adjusted to align with the official Tet holiday period. Rental rates during this festive season have been increased by about 20-30%.
“Each company has its own pricing strategy for Tet. Our company will definitely increase prices, but we will keep the increase reasonable,” the representative added.
The representative from Trung An Khang also mentioned that instead of limiting Tet rental packages to 10-12 days, customers this year will be renting for 8-9 days, following the nationwide holiday schedule.
He confirmed that it is now more challenging for customers to rent cars on a daily basis. According to him, this is a common situation for most self-drive car rental services during Tet. “During Tet, we often face staff shortages, making it difficult to handle car deliveries and returns. Therefore, we prioritize corporate clients, regular customers, and long-term rentals,” he further explained.
Renting Electric Vehicles: A New Trend
The demand for electric vehicle rentals has also been growing recently, prompting many self-drive car rental services to include these vehicles in their fleets. According to a survey by Tri Thức – Znews, rental prices for electric vehicles have not seen a significant increase during Tet compared to their gasoline-powered counterparts in the same segment.

For example, when contacting Hien Nguyen car rental service in Binh Tan, Ho Chi Minh City, the staff informed that they only have two electric vehicle models available for Tet: VF 5 Plus and VF 6. Customers are required to rent for a minimum of 5 days during the period from January 24 to February 11, with rental rates ranging from 600,000 to 750,000 VND per day.
In addition to the rental fee, customers also need to pay a charging fee of 700-800 VND per kilometer, depending on the vehicle model. Explaining this additional charge, the staff mentioned that it is mandatory and intended to cover the cost of renting the battery.
“For instance, for customers renting the VF 5 Plus, if they drive less than 200 kilometers, we will waive the charging fee. The charging fee will only be applied if they drive more than 200 kilometers, at a rate of approximately 800 VND per kilometer,” the staff added.

Cost of renting a VF 8 during the 5-day Tet holiday through FGF. |
In addition to multi-purpose vehicles like the VF 5 Plus and VF 6, or the compact VF 3, companies like FGF, a subsidiary of VinGroup, also offer rental services for high-end SUVs such as the VF 8 and VF 9.
These vehicles target corporate or individual customers who seek a luxurious driving experience. FGF provides flexible rental packages, ranging from short-term rentals of a few days to long-term rentals of up to a month, catering to diverse travel needs during the holiday season.
During Tet, FGF also announced a rental surcharge ranging from 20-33%, depending on the vehicle model, reflecting the increased demand during the holiday period.
To ensure service availability, the company requires a minimum rental period of 5 days.
The self-drive car rental market during Tet remains vibrant, with a preference for long-term rental packages. Notably, the shift towards renting electric vehicles is becoming a new trend, indicating a change in consumer behavior. This is a positive sign for the service industry and a driving force for the development of sustainable transportation in the future.
