In the Southeast Asian region, perhaps no market favors MPV cars like Indonesia. The top 10 best-selling passenger cars in the archipelago country in the first quarter of 2024 continue to clearly demonstrate that.

Specifically, in the first 3 months of this year, the best-selling car in the Indonesian market was the small MPV Daihatsu Sigra with sales reaching 16,876 units. This is the “twin brother” of the Toyota Calya and is smaller than the Avanza.

In second place is the small hatchback Honda Brio with a cumulative sales volume of 15,059 units. Previously, the Honda Brio was sold in Vietnam as a rival to the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Morning. However, in 2022, this model was discontinued in Vietnam due to disappointing sales.

The third position in the top 10 is the Toyota Innova Zenix with sales of 13,665 units. It can be seen that the new generation Toyota Innova is very successful in markets such as Indonesia and India. However, in Vietnam, the model originally known as the Toyota Innova Cross has sold quite slowly with cumulative sales in the first 3 months of 2024 reaching only 272 units.

The fourth best-selling passenger car in Indonesia in the first 3 months of this year was the Toyota Avanza with sales of 11,898 units. Similar to the Innova Cross, the Toyota Avanza is a “specialty” in Indonesia but is “stale” in Vietnam. In the first quarter of this year, Vietnamese people bought only 408 Toyota Avanza Premio units.

Next is the Toyota Calya with cumulative sales results of 9,968 units. This is a low-cost MPV with a wheelbase that is only comparable to that of an A-class car but is very popular in the Indonesian market.

Behind the Calya in terms of sales is the Toyota Rush. In the first quarter of this year, Toyota sold 8,834 Rush units to Indonesian customers. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, the Toyota Rush has been discontinued since 2022, leaving the spotlight to the Avanza Premio and Veloz Cross duo.

The seventh best-selling passenger car in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2024 is the Daihatsu Terios with sales reaching 6,063 units. The Daihatsu Terios is essentially a twin brother but a different brand from the Toyota Rush.

Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Xpander ranks eighth in the passenger car market in the archipelago country with sales stopping at 5,705 units. Compared to its rival Toyota Avanza, the Mitsubishi Xpander has sales that are only half. This is in stark contrast to the situation in the Vietnamese market. In the first quarter of this year, the Mitsubishi Xpander was the second best-selling model in the entire Vietnamese market with cumulative sales of 3,508 units, second only to the Ford Ranger (3,562 units).

However, it should also be added that Mitsubishi Xpander’s sales in Indonesia are not included in the results of the Xpander Cross. In the first 3 months of this year, Indonesians bought 4,534 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross units, helping the car rank 12th in the entire market.

The ninth position belongs to the Honda HR-V with sales of 5,106 units. With this sales volume, the Honda HR-V is the best-selling B-segment SUV and a high-riding vehicle in general in the Indonesian market. Compared to cars in Vietnam, the Honda HR-V is clearly much more successful in Indonesia. In the first quarter of this year, Vietnamese people bought a total of 1,842 Honda HR-V units, topping the B-segment SUV segment.

Ranked last in the top 10 is the Toyota Agya with sales reaching 4,930 units. The Toyota Agya is the Wigo currently sold in the Vietnamese market. Compared to the Wigo in Vietnam, which had sales of 520 units in the same period, the Toyota Agya in Indonesia sells nearly 10 times more.

Top 10 best-selling passenger cars in the Indonesian market in the first quarter of 2024

Besides that, there are also a few other notable names in the top 30 such as Toyota Veloz (3,971 units), Suzuki XL7 (3,841 units), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (3,798 units), Toyota Fortuner (3,634 units), Honda BR-V (2,764 units), Honda WR-V (2,660 units), Toyota Raize (2,489 units), Toyota Hilux (2,402 units), Hyundai Stargazer (2,319 units), Hyundai Creta (2,289 units) and Suzuki Ertiga (2,237 units).

The best-selling electric car in Indonesia in the first quarter was the Wuling Binguo EV with sales reaching 3,121 units. This result is quite impressive because the Wuling Binguo EV (also known as Bingo in China) has only been sold in Indonesia since December 2023. According to rumors, the Wuling Bingo may be sold in the Vietnamese market in the future.

Through the names that made it into the top 10, it is clear that MPVs dominate with 7 representatives, including the Daihatsu Sigra, Toyota Innova Zenix, Toyota Avanza, Toyota Calya, Toyota Rush, Daihatsu Terios, and Mitsubishi Xpander. 2 other names in the top 10 both belong to the A-segment car segment, namely the Honda Brio and Toyota Agya. The Honda HR-V is the sole representative of the SUV segment.

In addition, in the top 10, there is also the dominance of Japanese car brands, especially Toyota. All models that made it into the top 10 come from Japanese brands such as Toyota, Honda, or Mitsubishi. Meanwhile, Korean brands such as Hyundai and Kia still haven’t really gained a foothold in the biggest car market in Southeast Asia in 2023.
